Honor Roll and Eternal Flame Memorial

An eternal flame illuminates a black-granite Honor Roll listing Milwaukee County’s 3,472 War Dead from World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Four mosaic panels with the insignias of the Army, Airforce, Navy and Coast Guard, and Marines reflect in the pool of the Honor Court on Fitch Plaza. This moving memorial, erected when the building was originally designed in 1957 specifically honors Milwaukee County War Dead.

When the names of the Milwaukee County Vietnam War Dead were added, the Honor Roll became the first Vietnam Memorial in the country.

WWI Memorial

Located in an alcove south of the reflecting pool, this bronze plaque honors all Milwaukee County World War I War Dead.

Fox Company Memorial

This privately funded memorial is dedicated to the Marines of Fox Company, killed in action in Iraq.

Purple Heart Memorial

The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the United States Armed Forces who are  wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy or awarded posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who are killed in action or die of wounds received in action.  It is the oldest military decoration in present use.

As a tribute to the servicemen and women who have been awarded this honor, a committee was formed in 2007 with the goal of erecting a Purple Heart Memorial on the grounds of the War Memorial Center.  The Purple Heart Memorial was unveiled on Memorial Day 2008. We believe that all Purple Heart recipients deserve to be remembered, honored and represented by an appropriate memorial at this befitting site.

Abraham Lincoln Statue

This work of art, sculpted by Gaetano Cecere, was commissioned with pennies collected by school children and dedicated in 1934.  The statue was re-dedicated on Labor Day 1986.

Southeastern Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Memorial Southeastern Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Dedicated on October 20, 1991, this moving memorial has become the focal point of Veterans Park at Milwaukee’s Lakefront.

Three Wausau Red Granite columns stand 22, 26 and 30 feet high and represent; those Killed in Action, P.O.W./M.I.A.(s), and those returned home.

Five granite benches sit behind the columns symbolizing the five branches of the military.
Eleven granite posts encircle the memorial, each signifying one (officially recognized) year of the Vietnam War.

The inner circle of bricks is reserved for those who served in the Vietnam War.  The outer circle is for veterans of other wars and conflicts or for anyone who wishes to show their respect and support.

Commemorative bricks are available for purchase through the War Memorial Center office.  Bricks are engraved with the name of the veteran or individual and dedicated on Memorial Day.
